The octopus is a sentient being, deserving not to be murdered and used as a trivial moment of frivolous entertainment for hockey fans. The organization is supporting animal abuse in a most callous form.

I created this petition after watching yet another octopus die for the sake of entertainment at a home game of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings. It made me sick to my stomach that nobody was enraged. I wondered what would happen if somebody tossed out a murdered puppy or kitten.. And thus this petition.

No more!

End this barbaric practice, boot any and every fan that brings any dead animal to the game for such purposes, and revoke season's passes for anyone involved in this unfortunate form of sick mascot activity.

Detroit Red Wings,
Stop murdering octopus

Many people feel drawn to advocate for animals because even though they can feel pain and suffer just as we do, they do not have a way to advocate for their own welfare. In fact, animals are viewed by many as nothing more than property to be treated however the owner wishes. This view has created an inhumane situation for billions of animals that share our world.

Octopi are highly intelligent animals - proven to be as intelligent as cats. Not only is the death of these animals senselessly wasteful, it is the equivalent of throwing dead cats on the ice.

This is a terrible tradition. Octopuses are highly intelligent animals, and deserve respect and compassion.
