At a time when the Government should be investing more in tertiary education, the Gillard Government has announced tragic "savings measures" to the sector that will have damaging effects for both students and the institutions. These so-called "savings measures" will have the following impacts:

1. Putting extra costs on students to pay back the Students Start-Up Scholarship in addition to the continuously rising HECS fees.

2. Putting universities under pressure to find cost savings that will result in units being cut, teaching staff numbers being decreased, and university research being decreased.

3. Putting students with lower attendance and retention rates at university (such as students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, students from rural and regional areas, and indigenous students) under added pressure by universities having to significantly cut the support services for these students.

4. Making universities less internationally competitive by reducing their budgets at the same time as other Governments around the world are increasing their funding to universities.

When I saw the name, Craig Emerson, I thought it was going to be a plead for no more singing, but this is just as important.

I'm a second year uni student, and I can say that it's hard enough trying to complete a university degree without the added pressure of financial burdens, and now a major reduction in university funding on top of it all is just going to demotivate people from completing their degrees. The government says they need people to fill in jobs for this country and yet they're not making it any easier for us or themselves. They shouldn't be surprised when they see more and more tertiary students giving up on their degrees, which is a shame because all these people really could have made a difference to how this country could have progressed.
