Cinemark: Stop Supporting SeaWorld's Abuse of Orcas!

Over the summer, at a Cinemark theatre, I saw the documentary Blackfish. Blackfish exposed the abuse, neglect and cruelty suffered by the orcas at SeaWorld, and showed SeaWorld's unspeakable ignorance and willingness to look the other way if it meant more profit. After having seen Blackfish in a Cinemark theatre, I was stunned and appalled last week to see a popcorn bag with an orca and a SeaWorld logo advertising a Cinemark- SeaWorld promotion called the "Extend Your Summer Sweepstakes". I am asking Cinemark to end this promotion and not engage in future cooperative advertising arrangements that are based on cruel exploitation of orcas.

This afternoon, I received a call from James Meredith. I told him our stance and he informed me that the "Extend Your Summer Sweepstakes" has now ended, although popcorn buckets will still promote it until they run out. I emphasized that we wanted Cinemark to abstain from doing any cooperative advertising or promotions with SeaWorld in the future and while not making any guarantees, he said that he would take our views into consideration. I will be continuing this petition to show just how strong our voice is with the hope that Cinemark will promise never to engage in a marketing campaign with SeaWorld. Thank you all for your continued support.

People will love the parks that keep the orcas in captivity until they know the true story behind them. I used to go to Marineland in the South of France almost every summer and - to be honest - I loved it! It is so impressive to see these animals interact with humans. When someone asked me if I didn’t feel bad for the orcas living in captivity, I would answer: “Don’t worry, they were born in captivity so they don’t know what they are missing in the wild. Good people are taking care of them and they must be happy with their lives.” At least that’s what I answered until I watched the movie/documentary "Blackfish". Because that’s what I believed myself. I would never have considered people capable of taking a newborn calf away from its mother for it to attract more visitors in another park instead of ‘disturbing’ the acts of her mother. Apparently, just like most people, I was wrong.

Parents who are taking their kids to these parks definitely don't know what's going on there. Just like my parents didn't know when they first took me there. And we can't blame them for that, because the marine parks have become experts at hiding the truth for the public in order to make money. Even more, they hide the truth for their own trainers who put their lives in danger daily while working with these traumatized animals. And when it comes to an accident, they even dare to blame the trainers themselves for it. Dawn Brancheau for example, the last deadly victim of a captive orca (that we know of), was blamed by Seaworld for making an error leading to her own death. Show must go on, because it makes money. So let’s blame it on the dead and keep pretending there is nothing wrong with our business model of keeping traumatized animals in captivity.

We will not be able to stop this industry from their immoral practices just by writing letters to their managers. They just see the cash flow the animals generate and that is enough for them to make up for the rest. What needs to be done is raising awareness amongst the public, the parents with their kids at Seaworld’s gate, even the kids themselves. Everyone should watch the movie "Blackfish" to understand the past of these traumatized animals and the way this industry is hiding the truth. The testimonials and images shown in this movie are a real eye-opener. Neither the trainers nor the animals can be blamed for what happened several times. And the only way to stop the industry’s immoral practices is to cut off their revenue by convincing people not to go to these parks anymore.

Unconscionable. Wild animals are not here on the Earth to be enslaved for human profit!
