Cigna: Discontinue your support of tobacco-sponsored events like Java Jazz

    1. Petition by

      Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids

Cigna, a worldwide provider of health insurance and services, says they are “dedicated to helping the people we serve improve their health, well-being and sense of security.” If this is true, why are they co-sponsoring the upcoming Java Jazz Festival in Indonesia with a tobacco company? Actions speak louder than words!

More than three-quarters of Indonesian smokers started before the age of 19, the majority of which say they were exposed to tobacco industry advertising and brands as children. Tobacco use kills at least 200,000 Indonesians each year, and approximately 36 percent of the population smokes.

Let Cigna's CEO and President know that actions speak louder than words. You either care about the health and welfare of the people you serve or you don't.

      Annual Deaths Caused by Smoking

According to the World Health Organization, tobacco is the second leading cause of deaths all around the globe. The WHO estimates that 10 percent of all deaths are smoking related, which comes out to about five million people each year. This number is expected to grow to 10 million by 2020. Half of all smokers will die from their tobacco use. That's about 325 million deaths total.

      Secondhand Smoking Deaths

Secondhand smoke, or environmental tobacco smoke, is a mix of smoke exhaled from smokers and smoke from the burning end of a tobacco product. In effect, even the person who isn't actively smoking is still passively smoking. The dangerous components of second hand smoke linger in the air for hours after the burning tobacco product has been put out. Secondhand smoke causes 50,000 deaths in America each year. Some of those deaths are children who are victims of of sudden infant death syndrome and premature birth complications, among other causes.

Teenage smoking is imlicated in higher rates of smoking related illnesses and should be illegal. Please do not sponsor an event supported by the tobacco industry.

Why would Cigna support a concert in conjunction with tobacco? Glamorizing and giving the impression that tobacco company's care about anything and anyone besides their bottom line and pocket books is ridiculous. Well done Cigna.

Because I first hand know the impact of tobacco on ones health. I had a double Lung Transplant 9/28/11. I had begun smoking when I was 12. I have grandchildren and all children are impressionable and respond to the good and bad role models . I want them to have the support of anti -tobacco Musicians ,Artist who care about the message they put out there.

Cigna if you mean what you say about supporting health; then stop giving mix messages. Stop supporting all events associated with tobacco. Help save Our Children before it is to late.
