An undercover investigation by PETA exposed appalling abuse and neglect of dogs, cats and rabbits at Professional Laboratory and Research Services, Inc. in North Carolina, a contract company that tested insecticides and other chemicals for pharmaceutical companies. More than 3,200 Change.org members joined PETA and Kinship Circle in calling for the employees responsible to be charged with animal cruelty.

In early July, four workers from PLRS were indicted on 14 felony animal cruelty charges. This is the first time in U.S. history that individuals faced felony charges for the mistreatment of animals in a laboratory, and only the second time that cruelty to animals in a laboratory resulted in criminal prosecution.

Animals used in laboratories have very few protections. The exposure of this abuse by PETA, along with the thousands of people who spoke up for these animals and helped shine a light on the case made it possible to set a new precedent for holding lab workers responsible for the mistreatment of animals.

The Corapeake, NC lab was forced to close and surrender its “test subjects” after a PETA investigation uncovered diseased and wounded dogs, cats and rabbits. Over 9 months, PETA’s investigator recorded staff brutalizing terrified animals. One worker used pliers to wrench teeth from a frantic dog. Another tried to pull out a cat’s claws.
