Don't Evict Elderly Residents of Eventide Nursing Home

    1. Petition by

      Queenslanders Uniting

The Queensland Premier has sunk to a new low - his indiscriminate cost cutting will see high care aged care residents of Eventide Nursinghome on Brisbane's north side lose their home.

No one thought before the election to make Campbell Newman promise to not evict elderly people from their nursing homes, who would have thought a government could stoop so low, the staff of Eventide probably felt safe after hearing his promises about protecting workers on the front line, and the residents of Eventide couldn't have known that the new premier was going to kick them out of their homes.

Almost 46% of nursing home residents in the seat of Sandgate voted for
Mr Newman, and this is how he repays them - and what's worse, he outsourced the bad news to the Hospital board instead of being up front with them during the election campaign.

I think that Newman's job cuts in nursing has been damage enough to the high quality health care Queensland once had, and is entitled to. Now he has the audacity to evict older Australians often in need of constant care during their last years is a security well earned over decades of working for what they have given us. I cannot understand why Newman thinks this is the right thing to do in the name of "cost cutting", what about the pay raise he has given himself? that extra money should be put into the maintenance of our nursing homes, not into his pocket.

Do not elderly Australians deserve to be well treated as they age? Where else do they go? To the street?

Three of my grandparents were housed at Eventide. We are a local family, and having my Grandma and Graddads at Eventide meant that we could visit them frequently. It also gave me comfort that their final years, which were in many ways the most difficult for them, were spent in such a beautiful spot, on Bramble Bay. This service to the community is a tradition that stems back to the Benevolent Asylum at Dunwich, and a tradition that should always continue in Queensland. It would be a great shame on this Government to break with this tradition.

My 95 year old Mum is a resident of Eventide with great accommodation and the very best high care that she needs. Please consider my mother and not the political issue behind this inhuman decision.
