We, the community of Upstate, South Carolina urge the Blue Ridge Council, BSA and Palmetto Council, BSA to reject the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy.

Service organizations including the Girl Scouts, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and the 4H Club all welcome gay kids and adult leaders. Also, the American Medical Association has opposed the Boy Scouts' anti-gay policy, saying it could cause psychological trauma in youth.

We love the Boy Scouts, but we can’t support this policy. That's why we urge you to speak out and adopt an inclusive policy like other troops, packs, councils, and lodges across the country have done -- so the Boy Scouts can maintain its relevancy, improve recruitment, and truly live by the principles it teaches its members.

Hatred of gays is just as bad as hatred of blacks.

It is so sad that in the year of 2013 we still have all of this prejudice going on. We need to love and cheerish each other. The world is such an angry place. If we would just stop and think before we act or speak maybe the world could live as one. BSA needs to step up and show that it loves all of our young ones. Stop being bullies and be leaders. Isn't that what the BSA is suppose to teach. To all of my gay brothers and sisters. I love you and always remember to love yourselves. Most important! God doesn't make mistakes. He made you beautiful so don't let all this hate bring you down.

I was a Boy Scout and I have great respect for the organization.

But why discriminate against gays? It was bad enough when I was a member that my Troop would not accept African-Americans.

I am a strong supporter of equal rights for the LGBT community, including those of children. I also lived in the Upstate for six years during and after my college years at Clemson, so it is a place that is near and dear to my heart. Lastly, I was a Boy Scout (achieving Life Scout rank) and loved my time in the Scouts. BSA teaches valuable lessons and strong moral values, none of which should be used to single out any one group for exclusion. BSA's anti-gay policy is discrimination, pure and simple.
