Blue Cross of Idaho: Cover life-extending cancer treatment for a wife, mother, and teacher

***UPDATE, 6/25/2012*** Blue Cross has agreed to cover the main part of Danni's treatment! That still leaves Danni and James needing to cover the Avastin ($3,000+ every two weeks), however, so please continue to sign to put pressure on Blue Cross to pay for the entire treatment that she needs.

Danni Cote Gilbert has been battling Stage IV metastatic colon cancer for nearly two years, enduring multiple rounds of chemotherapy and a course of radiation. At the beginning of June a new, definitive study was presented at the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, changing the standard of care for colorectal cancer patients. When Danni's doctor recommended that Danni's therapy be changed to reflect this new standard, Blue Cross of Idaho denied coverage on the grounds that it was an experimental treatment. When Danni and her husband agreed to pay the costs out of pocket, Blue Cross of Idaho made the decision to deny payment for ALL of Danni's treatment, not just the new therapy.

The perverse question that Danni and her family must now answer is just how much extending her life is worth. At more than $11,000 every two weeks, the costs will quickly bankrupt Danni and her husband, both of whom have maintained their full-time employment as teachers while raising their two kids and remaining active in the community even as Danni has been, quite literally, fighting for her life.

A person battling cancer has enough to worry about without agonizing over a protracted fight with an insurer who had the most profitable year in its history in 2011, growing its net earnings from $12 million to $57 million in a single year. Tell Blue Cross of Idaho to live up to their stated mission of "(working) cooperatively with Idaho healthcare providers to ensure our customers' access to needed healthcare services." Don't deny Danni Cote Gilbert more time with her family. Do the right thing.

    1. Another three thousand + signatures have been added to the 100,000 !

Danni and her husband delivered the first 100,00+ signatures to the corporate offices of BlueCross of Idaho. Since then, the company has put the case in the hands of an arbiter with the promise that his/her decision will be binding for the company but not necessarily Danni. It remains to be seen how long such action will take; in the meantime, Danni's time is ticking away.

    2. Danni and her husband James delivered the 100,000+ signatures to BC of ID

It is difficult to say at this time how much the petitions will influence the decision of BC/I. The company has said that they will accept the decision of an outside medical examiner, and that is progress. I do know that the drive for signatures along with the hundreds of calls to the offices of BC/I served as a realization to that company and to others that we are not just a voice in the wilderness. Danni was so heartened by the response to her cause. The case and the drive were well covered by the media including a several columns in nationally-known venues, coverage in the local paper as well as on television. Danni and her family are so grateful for this outpouring of sympathy and support.

To clarify, Avastin did NOT stop working for Danni. It was her other treatment. Danni's oncologist learned of a new study that showed measurable improvement when adding Avastin to the second-line treatment.

I am calling on Blue Cross Idaho to cover Danni Gilbert's full cancer treatment, including the drug Avastin, so that she can spend more time with her family. I will continue to spread the word to my family and friends until your company does the right thing and covers all the medication Danni needs for her fight against cancer.

Just heard from Danni that Blue Cross of Idaho will be covering the main portion of her treatment! That still means that they will not cover the Avastin, however, so we need to keep sharing Danni's story. Thank you for caring enough to do this. Each of you is having an impact on this process!

as a liver transplant patient i would be floored if an insurance company told me they were no longer covering my essential for life medications. Healthcare needs an over all and insurance companies need to be auditied and forced to attend to patients.

Losing the person who should take care of you, who you love and defenitely can not miss is one of the most horrible things in the world. It's even worse if you lose this person knowing that there was a treatment and a chance for her but she didn't get that chance. She deserves it!

Blue Cross of Idaho is the states largest health insurer. This is the moraly and decent thing to do for one of Idahos citizens.
