Ban Declawing of Cats Unless Medically Necessary

Most people do not know that declawing doesnt just take out the claw, but is a series of bone amputations. Each toe of the cat is amputated at the first joint and declawing a cat is equivalent in a person to amputating the entire first knuckle of every finger

Declawing is performed solely for the convenience of the person who has the animal. It absolutely provides no benefit to the animal!

Declawing is one of the most painful, routinely performed procedures in all of veterinary medicine.

In most countries, it is illegal to declaw a cat and is seen as inhumane.

Many cats that are declawed refuse to use their litter box. Also, cats that are declawed are likely to begin to bite since their nails were their primary defense.

Post-surgical complications can include lameness, abscesses, joint stiffness, arthritis, and in some cases where the veterinarian left part of the bone in the toe, the claw can begin to grow again. However, the claw grows abnormally under the skin.

There are many alternatives that are humane. You can teach a cat not to scratch furniture by getting scratching posts. Soft Paws are caps you can place on the cats nails that prevent them from scratching, they last for many weeks, and they come in all sorts of colors. Sticky Paws is a double sided tape that teaches the cat not to scratch. Trimming the cats nails also helps.

Mayor Mark Burroughs, City of Denton
Create an Ordinance to Ban the Declawing of Cats because it is inhumane. We need to protect the animals that cannot protect themselves.

Cats have been a part of my life since I can remember. I have always seen declawing as a barbaric practice, I would never want to have my fingers and toes cut off. If you don't want a cat that might claw your furniture, then don't get a cat, get a dog.

It's time the U.S. catches up with the other countries that ban this inhumane procedure.

Why in the hell would you purposely hurt a cat for life. Putting a piece of furniture over a beloved pet is absolutely wrong on so many levels.

Declawing cats are selfish and in no way helps the life of the feline. It's painful and mutilation!
