- NO queremos peces contaminados.

 - NO queremos una posible crisis turística.

Firma ahora esta petición y únete a nosotros.

English version:

Port authority is developing a project to dredge Maó’s harbour. The 200.000 m3 of mud extracted by the project will be placed one nautical away from Menorca’s coast.

Since the 19th century, polluting heavy metals such as mercury, lead or copper have been poured in Maó’s harbour. These spills consisting of the above mentioned polluting heavy metals are trapped in the mud. According to the parameters of the CEDEX – Centre d’estudis I Experiments d’obres Públiques – the pollution level of the harbour is 3, a real threat to the ecosystem and to those fed on fish or other living organisms that live there. Several NGOs report lack of attention to alternative ecological solutions.

The NGO Oceana has reported this negligence to the UNESCO in Paris. This negligence can result in the polluting of the marine environment as the currents will spread the polluted particles – mainly mercury – all around Menorca’s coast and possibly some other islands like Mallorca or Ibiza, this is why Oceana suggests that the UNESCO intercedes to stop this project, as Menorca was declared Reserva de la Biosfera by the UNESCO. The studies carried out by Port Authority show different contradictions reported by environmental NGOs.

The dredging of the harbour and pollution of the water and marine life, are due to start next Wednesday, March the 18th. The tourism industry depends on the image of the island and the fishing industry depends on fish being healthy. Scientific studies warn that these heavy metals do not deteriorate, so they will remain in the sea indefinitely. The only possible solution is preventing it from happening. This is why it is important to spread this new, which is unknown by the great majority of people from the island and the world.

We know that it has already made it to the news abroad, Europa Press and the main newspapers are talking about it. Our image is at risk.
We are not against the dredging of the harbour, we only ask for an alternative solution which respects the environment or for a study of the areas which haven’t been analysed yet, as well as a more transparent management of the entire project.

El mercurio es un gran tóxico. El problema necesita asistencia parlamentaria y otras respuestas.
