People watch national news programs to get credible, honest information about critical issues facing America, like our energy future—particularly during election season. But the American Petroleum Institute (API) is airing misleading ads on TV and radio across the nation about serious energy issues that affect our communities, our public health, and our environment.
This industry-led group is made up of some of the worst offenders when it comes to dirty energy: Chevron, Exxon, Duke Energy and many more. With the elections around the corner, API is truly living up to its “dirty” name by running it’s “Vote for Energy” ads that claim to advocate sound energy policy, but are really aimed at keeping us hooked on their dirty fuels, to the tune of billions of dollars in profits for the companies it represents. These profits go right back into their ads, misleading American people.
According to the New York Times, the API is the top spender of energy ads this year with its Vote for Energy campaign, to the tune of an estimated $37 million. One of issues they are subtly promoting in these ads is the issue of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which involves injecting millions of gallons of fracking fluids—a mixture of nearly 600 chemicals, water and sand—into a well to create pressure that cracks open rocks underground, releasing natural gas. One ad claims “New technologies are safely unlocking vast domestic supplies of oil and gas, like energy from shale.” As you may know, fracking is not safe. It is a dangerous and destructive method of fossil fuel extraction that has had grievous consequences, ranging from water contamination and health problems to earthquakes in communities across the country.
Studies by countless researchers have raised serious questions about the risks of fracking. Tell the major news networks to stop airing misinformation from API during election season.
