Victory

Charlotte Goldsworthy: On Monday the 10th of March I was invited to present my petition to the Wanganui District Council.. I am so pleased to announce to everyone that signed my petition, we can officially now declare VICTORY!!! After meeting with council staff a few days after the petition was started, and with some major help from animal rescue organisation HUHANZ, we were able to get the use of the gas chamber halted immediately until a final decision was made! That decision was made on Monday and after a unanimous vote from all council members it was agreed to rule the chamber out completely in favor of the more humane method of injection! As a result, there are more great changes to come, with the pound in for an upgrade and desexing and re-homing programs being worked on. Wanganui District Council have been fantastic and are committed to building a brighter future for all our pound dogs!

Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU to everyone for your support, together we did it!!! :)

Wanganui Pound is one of only a few in New Zealand still using gas as an acceptable method of killing pound dogs.

Gassing any animal to death is painful, cruel, and barbaric. Dogs are often frightened and distressed while being crammed into the gas chamber, usually in multiple amounts. What is humane about this? In many shelters WORLDWIDE this has been completely out ruled, so why is this still happening here??

We are calling for a total ban on this completely inhumane method of killing pound dogs. The Wanganui District Council needs to stand up, take notice and make the necessary changes to provide the pound with the resources they need so these animals, where necessary, can be euthanized humanely by injection.

Animals deserve to be treated with respect, even in death.

Please help us make a difference by signing our petition and spreading the word!

    4. GAS CHAMBER UPDATE

      Charlotte Goldsworthy
      Petition Organiser

Yesterday HUHA was charged with the task of finding a cheap but humane alternative to the gas chamber, and today there were literally tears of joy as we successfully negotiated a suitable and acceptable remedy between the pound and a local vet practice...to start immediately...yes immediately! So while the end of the gas chamber can not officially be declared until some council red tape is processed, it is unofficially official that council has accepted the alternative and are busily making changes to their facility! Though its still a bitter sweet feeling. On one hand the process has been our best and most positive negotiation yet (the council folk truly were a pleasure to work with) on the other hand even administered with more respect and dignity, the reality is hundreds of animals will still die.So come on Wanganui, the council has stepped up and now its time for the community to do so as well....lets be responsible owners, love and care for our pets and get them desexed!!

I have a most adorable Bichon Frise who loves me unconditionally. If I knew she could be subjected to this inhumane and deplorable treatment, we would leave dear old NZ and take up residence where they treat animals with the respect they deserve. Like humans, they didn't ask to be born into this world so it is up to the population of this country to get behind HUHA with all the support we can muster. I love my "Honey", and I will to the end of her days of which I trust will much later than sooner. She is my baby so I treat her as I would any child. Regards, Sandi

I'm only signing this so that while these dogs are still dying at least it's more humane. BUT, the key issue is that they're being killed at all. There needs to be more support for no-kill shelters! These beautiful, innocent creatures shouldn't have to suffer because some ignorant, cruel owner couldn't be bothered with them anymore. The next step for this pound should be a re-homing program.
