Last Friday, Speaker John Boehner walked out of debt ceiling negotiations with President Obama. He also refused to return the president’s phone call. It is clear that Republicans prioritize political posturing and not the U.S. economy.
We are down to the wire. Our entire economy rests on the full faith and credit of the United States government, but if the Republicans get their way and allow the government to default on its debt, the resulting economic disaster would make 2008’s meltdown look like a pothole. Markets would plunge. Home values and retirement accounts would be wiped out. Soldiers wouldn’t be paid. And veterans’ benefits and Social Security checks would stop.
And for what? So extremist Republicans can end Medicare, but keep subsidies for oil companies.
It’s time for us to stand up and tell John Boehner to stop holding our economy hostage. Add your voice with the DSCC: Tell Boehner to do his job and compromise on the debt ceiling.
