On October 25, a video was uploaded on the website World Star Hip Hop showcasing the Chicago rapper, Lil Reese, violently beating a woman.

The video begins with the rapper and the woman having a verbal argument, exchanging insults and Reese then beating the woman repeatedly even while on the ground.

This behavior is unacceptable and should never be tolerated or rewarded. Def Jams artist Lil Reese’s comments on the incident are even more appalling, he simply states that…
“The haters tryna see a mf Dwn lol Dey gotta b broke and bored wanna upload sum shit from years ago damnn we winnin it’s 2 late…#3hunna….Dis wat doin betta den da next mf bring small shit it's nothin time 2 turn Uppp fuck it...‪#3hunna.” Lil Reese tweeted.

Not only does Reese disregard the incident but he makes no attempts to comment or apologize for his actions instead he focuses on the “haters” and the time in which this incident occurred.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, this is another sad reminder that we as a society have evolved very little in regards to our approach to Violence Against Women. This should not be a “touchy subject” nor should we as a society be afraid to speak against this kind of behavior. We should be reminded daily that “one in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime and that on average more than three women are murdered by their partner in this country EVERY DAY (dvrc.or.org)!”

This is why we DEMAND that Def Jam records drop Lil Reese from his recording contract. Anyone who has a platform to delegate and choose who represents their company should send a clear message that violence against women is not acceptable no matter when the violence occurred. The hip hop community should no longer be plagued with individuals who show little respect and disregard for women. He should not be allowed to continue with a career that has the potential to influence teens, young adults or any individual into thinking that this kind of behavior is acceptable; NEVER, NEVER is violence against a woman acceptable and Def Jam Records NEEDS to make this known by dropping him from their label.

This man should not be able to represent our men or hip hop culture. This is a disgrace.

We continuously ignore violence inflicted upon women by the very people who were put on this earth to protect us. Silence hides violence. Silence is acquiescence. Saying nothing is allowing it, accepting it, condoning it.

I work in the field of domestic violence and hate seeing violence of anykind but especially toward women being tolerated.
