Create a toddler play area at the Yerba Buena Children's Playground

Within the past 5 years, many new families have decided to stay and raise their children in the Soma area. Unfortunately, there aren't very many facilities for toddlers and young children.

The Yerba Buena Children's Playground is a wonderful facility and we have been visiting the park nearly every day since our daughter was just a few months old. Now that she is one-year old and walking, she loves to run on the playground, but has been trampled by older children using the slides and equipment. The playground was really designed for older children (5+ years) but there isn't any equipment for toddlers.

I hope the community can come together to help build a structure for toddlers better suited for 1-3 year olds.

Please help provide a facility for all of the new families in Soma by creating a toddler play area at the Yerba Buena Children's Playground.

Sincerely,

We met with Mary and the Chief Engineer, Chris, for the Gardens. We're looking at removing the dated box-hedge maze area and replacing it with the toddler playground. The next step is providing ideas and photos for examples, hiring and architect, developing plans, fundraising, permits, and getting this built! We clearly have a lot more work to do, especially if we're trying to fast track this for summer 2013!

Please share your ideas at http://somakids.tumblr.com.

Mary would like to meet with us to hear our feedback and what we'd like to see at Yerba Buena Playground next Wednesday, March 6th. I'll be emailing all petition signers with the details. Thank you!

    4. Call From Mary's Assistant Today

I received a phone call today from Mary's assistant since Mary is out on vacation. She said Mary is eager to meet with us to discuss plans for the park and even made mention that the engineer had already been surveying locations for toddler equipment. She asked that a few parents join the meeting which will be scheduled in about 2-3 weeks. I will keep you posted about the date and time, but this is great news!

I also reiterated that this petition was never meant to be seen in a negative light. We all love Yerba Buena Park and wanted to show the management team that we're a strong community of parents, grandparents, and caregivers dedicated to making YB a fun and safe place for our toddlers!

Our family is grateful to have access to a well cared for and maintained Yerba Buena & Park. We are grateful for the staff that maintains the grounds, runs the concert series, but especially Abraham and Cole who directs everyone towards safety and creates a wonderful story time for our children. We are also thankful for the outstanding Children's Creativity Museum that our family enjoys weekly. With that being said, creating a toddler area would allow our little ones the ability to enjoy this fine Yerba Buena Garden Community at their own level and pace.

I have a 1 year old and another on the way. We love Yerba Buena and are members at the Museum but it is all for older kids. This neighbourhood is growing and full of young families who need to start their kids out with urban play-spaces and good opportunities to socialise without getting bowled over by older kids.

I'm a new parent to a 6 mth old and we regularly visit this park. It would be great to be more toddler friendly for him and other toddlers who visit the park regularly.

There are many families with babies and toddlers in SOMA and it would be great to have some outside play space for the younger age group in Yerba Buena.
