A note from Trisha Knuth, Charlie's Mom: Charlie will be re-enrolled into the Kimberly School District. Through the hard work of Randy Hughes (Superintendent of Kaukauna School District) and Tim Fossage (Special Ed Kimberly Schools) we were able to develop an educational plan for Charlie. Charlie will begin Thursday. He will have a Home Bound Teacher come to our house 4 days a week and when Charlie is able to be in the classroom, we will slowly integrate Charlie into his class. We need to see how much Charlie can handle. The goal is to "catch" Charlie up with the other kids. I appreciate all the wonderful people who signed the petition, offered helpful advice, shared Charlie's story, left thoughtful messages and words of encouragement.

Charlie & his family have been through enough in his 6 short years. He should be in 1st grade with his familiar teachers and friends NOW! The Kimberly, WI. School District is denying his enrollment at this time after he recently returned to his home in Darboy after spending several months out of state for his 2nd stem cell transplant. Charlie's complete story can be found here: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/charletonknuth
A recent article from a local news station in WI can be found here: www.nbc26.com/news/181271211.html

Bob Mayfield's quote is "Charlie is welcome back to the district when he is no longer HOME-BOUND". Bob Mayfield is denying Charlie access to a tutor within his district and wants to send him to another district nearby where Charlie knows no one. Why the change? Why can't this brave, strong boy, who has overcome so much already with his EB be allowed to resume his routine? He misses school desperately.

This is outrageous. Let's try to get Charlie back to LEARNING with the same teachers he has grown to love and back to trying to live a normal life!

QUOTE from Charlie's Mom: "Please sign this petition. Charlie does not deserve to be kicked out of a district because he was fighting for his life in a hospital. Since when is habitual truancy the same as " hospitalization?" Please make your voice heard, and use Charlie's story to speak for those who can't speak up for themselves."

To:
Robert S. Mayfield, Ed.D, Superintendent of Schools, Kimberly, WI.
Let Charlie Knuth return to the school he has always attended before his 2nd stem cell transplant! He misses his teachers & friends. Allow the tutors to come to his home to educate him as before! Why the change NOW? Let this family and this young man heal and return to a normal routine. This family does not need yet another fight on their hands. LET CHARLIE RECEIVE HIS EDUCATION!

Sincerely,
[Your name]

      Charlie Knuth's Next Struggle: School

After taking on a potentially fatal disease, the Knuth family may now be locked in different kind of struggle. Charlie, from Darboy, now six years old, has undergone two stem cell transplants in an effort to cure a rare, extremely painful, and often deadly skin condition known as EB.

      Life isn't fair for Charlie

Posted on December 7, 2012 - Tiny I found Charlie a little over a year ago, it was one of those night where I surfed the internet looking for something to read. Charlie captured my heart, at first I was just reading his journey, which is tantamount to his life and I found myself being pulled into caring about this little guy.

      FACTS:
      - Charlie did not miss any open enrollment deadline. Charlie was already a Kimberly Student, and he always has been.
-Charlie's enrollment was TERMINATED without any prior notification while he was in the hospital.
-I was told that this was just a "technicality" and to re-open enroll him under the exception law.
-Did that...waited for weeks and heard nothing back from Kimberly. So I sent them an e-mail stating that Charlie needed school.
-was called 3 nights ago by Superintendent Bob Mayfield that they were denying his open enrollment. He was not allowed back in the district until he was no longer home bound.
-He was home bound all of last year, had a tutor through his school in Kimberly, and this was his IEP that was developed for him by Kimberly.
We are not asking for ANY rules to bent. In fact, We are asking the the Laws be upheld!

Is Charlie not suffering enough as it is? So why take away what he knows? The sooner students in the school are exposed to the realities of life the better, they will develop compassion and less judgement.

I have followed Charlie's story and he has gone through more than most people do in an entire lifetime. He should not be denied admitance to school. Hasn't Charlie and his family been through enough?
