Bring back the Marngrook Footy Show for 2013

Marngrook Footy show is a Australian Rules Football show, produced and hosted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander former footballers and reporters. It gives different point of view to the mainstream blokey footy shows, and showcases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander footy talent. The gals and guys are fantastic role models for all Australians, but particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids.

Under the ABC Charter, it is charged with  "providing within Australia innovative and comprehensive broadcasting services of a high standard as part of the Australian broadcasting system consisting of national, commercial and community sectors and, without limiting the generality of the foregoing, to provide:

(i) broadcasting programs that contribute to a sense of national identity and inform and entertain, and reflect the cultural diversity of, the Australian community; and

(ii) broadcasting programs of an educational nature".

Marngrook meets all these, and more. It's also bloody entertaining.

      We need Marngrook

When returning to Australia from overseas, I'm always a little bit apprehensive that I might somehow have been corrupted by the sophistication and comparative elegance of the foreign cultures that I visited during my time away. I have this niggling concern that I will no longer feel like I belong; that I will suddenly see...

and the show might go on on SBS/NITV, although it's still a poor decision by an ABC that has lost touch with it's Charter

Support for axed indigenous footy show swells

A RISING Liberal frontbencher has joined the chorus of outrage at the ABC's decision to axe the Marngrook Footy Show, writing to ABC managing director Mark Scott urging him to reconsider the decision. Jamie Briggs, the shadow parliamentary secretary for supporting families, and avid Carlton supporter, has written to Mr Scott to "register my deep concern" and asking him to "urgently reconsider".

Wow, we have reached 500 people who care about Marngrook Footy Show in just over 24hours! When I started the petition, I thought if we limped a 100 amongst friends and family, and the guys I kicka footy with, that would be great. 500 people, from all parts of the country, and Wales, and Washington and Macau ! We’ve had prominent people sign, and everyday people, indigenous people and non indigenous people, people who care about social justice, and people who care about good entertainment, and both. And every cares about footy!

Like Michael Clarke, lets aim for 1000 runs in the calendar year.

It is just a good show. I don't follow AFL and I'm not aboriginal but enjoy their banter.

It's the only good footy show. But more importantly it's such a natural platform for Aborigal Australia to shine and to lead. To be in the public eye as talented, interesting, funny, thoughtful and just everyday leaders who have nothing to do with the myriad of issues facing Aboriginal Australia.
