Terminally Ill Denied Treatment that Healthy People are Paid to Try

A message from Amanda Bernier: My name is Amanda, I’m 30 years old and a new mom. It crushes my soul that my baby won’t have her mother for much longer and she will grow up without me. Just weeks into my pregnancy I learned that I had ALS – at age 29! I went from running races, working in a lab, and firefighting to not being able to move anything but my head and on a ventilator in 5 months. ALS is a devastating disease, that currently has no effective FDA approved treatments. However, there are promising therapies in the FDA approval pipeline that might improve my chances and quality of life, but the FDA isn’t willing to expedite the approval of these drugs, even though the average life expectancy of an ALS patient is 3-5 years and the average time it takes for a drug to become FDA approved is over a decade.   Please join me and Hope NOW for ALS in petitioning Congress and the FDA to apply Accelerated Approvals (AAP) to promising treatments targeting terminal diseases, and implement faster, smarter, and more humane clinical trials using today’s science. This is not a radical or new idea. In 1992, in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the FDA adopted the Accelerated Approval Program (AAP) – an expedited approval process to treat fatal diseases. This was a process to allow patients fast access to potentially life saving drugs, and has since been used for cancer and heart failure treatments. But the FDA refuses to apply it to ALS and other rapidly fatal diseases. How can it possibly be fair to exclude the most vulnerable and at risk people -- those with fast acting terminal diseases -- from this program? ALS is always fatal, and there are currently over 30,000 patients in the US with no options. We need help. We need options. Please join me and Hope NOW for ALS to help save my life, and the lives of so many others around the country.  For more information go to: http://www.hopenowforals.org/

(SOS) Sign To Save Our Sons, give our Duchenne boys their miracle. FDA Approve Drisapersen

My name is Tonya Carlone, mother of Gavin who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  This is a rare fatal muscle weakening disease.  Typically boys with Duchenne lose their ability to walk by age 12 and are confined to a wheelchair.  By their late teens they are unable to move their arms and ventilation is usually required. Those who suffer from Duchenne usually die from cardiac failure around the age of 25, but many die sooner from complications. My son and many other Duchenne boys have been participating in a clinical drug trial for an experimental medication, called Drisapersen.  The FDA was expected to make a decision whether or not to approve this medication by Christmas, but at the last minute delayed the decision until January. A decision could come down any day now.  This medication has allowed my son, Gavin to be able to ride a 2 wheel bike, to play on a soccer team, to run and play with his healthy 10 year old peers. Dr. Craig McDonald of UC Davis Medical Center and a Duchenne expert of over 30 years, has stated that he has never seen a boy with Duchenne at the age of 10 have as much function as Gavin.   Sadly, many of us in the Duchenne community had this medication taken from us before and we watched our precious children rapidly decline. Thankfully, after many months off Drisapersen, our children were able to re-dose.  These kids are thriving once again.  We are begging for your support to save our children’s lives.  We know with 100 percent certainty what will happen to our children without Drisapersen’s approval, they will die.   Please sign this petition and help us urge the FDA to approve this life saving medication. There are many other children who could benefit from this treatment who are anxiously awaiting to have access to this medication as well.

Tell the FDA to stop denying ALS patients treatment options

When I became a parent, I knew immediately that I would do anything to protect my daughters from the hardest parts of life. My mission would be to give them as much love and comfort as I possibly could. But now instead of me taking care of them, my daughters are often responsible for taking care of me, because in May of 2014 I was diagnosed with ALS. Now, instead of protecting them, my daughters are forced to watch as my body dies one muscle at a time. ALS is always fatal, and there are currently over 30,000 patients in the US with no options. We need help. We need options. My diagnosis is the greatest challenge my family has ever faced, and my daughters have amazed me with their grace and strength in taking on this battle with me. I know that even though my life has not turned out like I imagined it, I can still be the dad I always wanted to be, and I can still show my daughters what it means to take a stand for what counts. Please join me and Hope NOW for ALS to help save my life, and the lives of so many others around the country.

Save His Pension!

My husband did physically demanding work for over 30 years for Yellow Freight, and he did it happily, knowing that all of his hard work came with the promise of a pension to support us in our retirement. In 2014, Congress decided that those promises don’t matter -- it passed the Multi-Employer Pension Recovery Act (MPRA), which allows for disastrous cuts to the pensions of those who are already retired and on a fixed income. The pension Jeff earned will now be cut by 50%, putting our home and future in jeopardy. The MPRA was slipped into a must-pass Omnibus budget bill just hours before it had to be voted on to keep the government from shutting down. This dirty tactic was the only way such an unfair law could get passed. Now, lawmakers are trying to work to reverse the damage before it is too late, with the Keep Our Pension Promises Act (KOPPA).  UPDATE 4/9/16: THE SAME PEOPLE WHO HAD MPRA SLIPPED INTO THE OMNIBUS IN 2014 ARE NOW WORKING ON A BILL TO MAKE IT LEGAL TO SLASH PENSIONS OF RETIREES IN FUNDS LIKE JEFF'S  THAT ARE LESS THAN 120% FUNDED. THIS IS BLATANT PENSION THEFT! Tell Congress to protect seniors’ pensions. Pass the Keep Our Pension Promises Act. For lawmakers, many of whom are financially secure and don’t need to worry about their retirement, stories like ours don’t seem to matter when they pass harmful legislation. We don't live extravagantly. Now, because of MPRA, we are not sure if we can keep our home. Even worse, we have to stop helping two relatives with food and medical expenses.  Jeff is 69 and I'm 66 and I’m scared we will be expected to go back into the workforce if we want to survive. Even if we wanted to, my husband has two bad shoulders and a bad hip from over 30 years of heavy lifting at Yellow Freight. I have a heart problem. It is a shame we are in a place where seniors even have to entertain this idea. The wealthiest country in the world can do better. Our lawmakers can do better. Jeff is a Vietnam vet. 60% of pensioners affected by this bill are Veterans.  Jeff's pension fund still has $18 billion he and 400,000 others worked hard for. People like us cannot afford laws like the MPRA. It must be reversed or seniors like us could find ourselves on the streets and living in poverty. Please join us in asking Congress to pass the Keep Our Pension Promises Act.

Endorse Senator Sanders for President

Senator Warren and Congressional Progressive Caucus members, Founding member of the CPC, Senator Bernie Sanders is the only true progressive and the only CPC member running in the Democratic Party primaries. Unlike Secretary Clinton, Senator Sanders strongly opposes the corporate-crafted Trans-Pacific Partnership which is detested by progressives of every stripe. Only Bernie Sanders has a convincing plan to kill the anti-reform payola that gave us fast-track for the TPP --  the very political bribery that stains Secretary Clinton and her Foundation. Deeply understanding that such money is a malignant cancer on our body politic, Sanders alone has dared call for a desperately needed “Political Revolution” against its electoral and legislative domination. Author Naomi Klein, echoed by Pope Francis, has stressed that humanity’s very survival now depends on peace-minded grassroots progressives taking control of policy from greedy, militaristic neo-liberals. Knowing the dire urgency for a progressive to capture Executive Branch control over national policy, how can Congressional progressives for one second consider entrusting U.S. policy to corporatist hawk Hillary Clinton rather than exemplary progressive Bernie Sanders?  Grassroots progressives expect congressional progressives to "walk your talk" and support your fellow progressive, Bernie Sanders. We, the undersigned implore you, Senator Warren and members of the Progressive Caucus, to publicly endorse Senator Sanders for President.

Demand the Immediate Release of Oromo Peace Activist Bekele Gerba and other Political Prisoners from Ethiopian Prison

(Photo Credit: Mahafreen H. Mistry/NPR) On the evening of Dec 23, 2015, Bekele Gerba, was at home, reading at his desk in the company of his wife and son when armed Ethiopian federal security forces surrounded his home, entered and searched his house against his will, and forcibly arrested him. His family and witnesses were told that he would be taken to Makalawi, an infamous high security prison where they could visit him in 24 hours. But they were not allowed to see him. The day he was scheduled to appear in court, he disappeared. Later, he was taken to a hospital where word got out that he had been beaten to unconsciousness during an interrogation at a military camp. He continues to be denied visitation. Right now, he is being held incommunicado, and we have grave concerns that his health is deteriorating. Bekele Gerba is the Deputy Chairman of the Oromo Federalist Congress party and a widely respected peace advocate. He is a renowned voice for nonviolence, urging only peaceful forms of resistance to violent oppression in Ethiopia.  He envisions peaceful struggle as the preferred means for attaining democracy, unity, and justice. He has become a significant voice of this generation.  His arrest late December was not his first. In August 2011, following a meeting with Amnesty International about Ethiopia’s human rights violations, Bekele was imprisoned, charged under the 2009 Anti-Terrorism proclamation and sentenced to eight years. Similarly trumped up charges are frequently used to silence any voice of opposition to the government. He was released in late March 2015 upon appeal, and upon his release, he was invited to the U.S. to deliver keynote remarks at an academic conference.  He spent a week in Washington, meeting with members of the diplomatic community. He met with Congress members, State Department officials, media outlets and human rights groups. He gave an interview to NPR’s Michele Kelemen about the lack of political space in Ethiopia and to Al Jazeera’s The Stream. Recently, he spoke to Al Jazeera about the Ethiopian government’s violent crackdown on widespread Oromo protests against proposed large-scale land takeovers that will displace millions of farmers. For most of his life, Bekele was a professor of foreign languages. A few years ago, he declared that he could not simply witness the widespread and systematic oppression, ethnic persecution and grievances of his people, the Oromo, and the Ethiopian government’s merciless targeting and killing of the Oromo. Amnesty International reported, “between 2011 and 2014, at least 5000 Oromos have been arrested based on their actual or suspected peaceful opposition to the government.”  Dejene Tafa, the legal advisor to OFC, was also recently arrested, as was Addisu Bulala, Desta Dinka, Singer Hawi Tezera, Birra Gemedi, Hailu Adugna, poet Goshu Girma, journalist Getachew Shiferaw, young students Lomitu Waqbulcho and Hirut Tola, news anchor Fikadu Mirkana and many more. Right now, thousands upon thousands of civilians are being rounded up, arrested, tortured or killed by federal security for participating in peaceful Oromo protests. Please stand with Bekele and all Oromo political prisoners. Join us in signing this petition calling for their immediate release.  “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”- MLK

Ban feline declawing in the state of Massachusetts

In the state of Massachsetts, like many other states, it is perfectly legal to declaw your cat. Pet owners tend to pay for this inhumane procedure to prevent a cat from scratching them or their belongings. "Onychectomy, popularly known as declawing, is an operation to remove an animal's claws surgically by means of the amputation of all or part of the distal phalanges, or end bones, of the animal's toes." "Contrary to most people's understanding, declawing consists of amputating not just the claws, but the whole phalanx (up to the joint), including bones, ligaments, and tendons! To remove the claw, the bone, nerve, joint capsule, collateral ligaments, and the extensor and flexor tendons must all be amputated. Thus declawing is not a "simple", single surgery but 10 separate, painful amputations of the third phalanx up to the last joint of each toe. A graphic comparison in human terms would be the cutting off of a person's finger at the last joint of each finger." People don't realize that this procedure will in fact ruin a cats life and lead to a ton of different problems including but not limited to: excruciating pain, damage to the radial nerve, hemorrhage, bone chips that prevent healing, painful regrowth of deformed claw inside of the paw which is not visible to the eye, and chronic back and joint pain as shoulder, leg and back muscles weaken. There are many options to consider before declawing: clipping your cats nails biweekly, buying them a scratching post or purchasing "Soft Paws" a clip on rounded tip nail cover invented by a Veterinarian to prevent declawing procedures from happening. There are a lot of people educated on this topic but there are still many who know nothing about it and unknowingly take part in animal cruelty to their own cat. By signing this petition you are agreeing that this procedure is inhumane and allowing everyone else the knowledge to understand this as well. Declaw Awareness Day is March 29th, let's see how far we can by then!

Help Our Most Vulnerable Get Back on Their Feet.

SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income. Social Security administers this program. SSI provides benefits to some of our country’s most vulnerable citizens, including the elderly, those with disabilities, and 1.3 million children. Unfortunately often persons with disabilities live in poverty.  For many recipients, SSI isn’t just a safety-net – it’s their only source of income. Yet, those who receive it can have no more than $2,000 in cash or liquid assets without forfeiting their benefits. $2,000 is barely enough for any American to survive.   Imagine this scenario: you want to set aside $100.00 a month to invest to make your later years of life more comfortable. Unfortunately as the law is now you cannot because if that account rises over the $2,000 limit you will be forced to forfeit your SSI benefits.    The Social Security Act of 1935 was an attempt to limit what was seen as dangers in the modern American life, including old age, poverty, unemployment, disability and the burdens on widows and fatherless children. By signing this act on August 14, 1935, President Roosevelt became the first president to advocate federal assistance for the elderly. Under the Supplemental Security Income Restoration Act (SSIRA), a new bill proposed by U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown, SSI recipients could increase their assets to $10,000 in cash or liquid assets without losing their benefits.  This bill is long overdue, and can go far to ensure that America’s most vulnerable citizens have a chance to better their station in life, and take their shot at the American dream. Please join me in telling Congress to pass the SSIRA and help make a difference for millions of Americans. The last asset limit increase was nearly 30 years ago. These requirements have not kept up with inflation, but recipients are stuck; unable to better their position, because saving money or having more than $2,000 in their bank account or saving for their future causes forfeiture of their benefits. The SSIRA would update the law to encourage individuals who receive SSI to work toward financial security. If an SSI recipient is able to save over the minimal amount of $2,000 that might one day give them more financial independence and make them less reliant on government aid, why discourage it? We should be helping those who are willing and able to get out of poverty, not obliging them to stay their.  Time and again, we have been told that the American dream means you can start from the bottom and make it to the top. But with the current SSI restrictions, that is not true for some of America’s poorest and most in need. I feel it is every person's right to change their station in life by increasing their wealth. For those on SSI, that hopefully means being able to have a little extra income so they don’t have to rely solely on the small monthly Social Security payments they receive. People should not have to fear losing their benefits simply because they want to better their financial future. Please join me in supporting  the SSIRA and tell Congress to do the same.
