The destruction of the lawn at Los Angeles City Hall following the Occupy LA demonstrations presents the city with a unique opportunity to replace the lawn with landscaping that is more in keeping with the sustainability and conservation policies that are promoted by the Mayor and the City of Los Angeles. While the City is urging homeowners and businesses to replace turf lawn with sustainable alternatives, we feel it is imperative that the City utilize this opportunity to set an example by re-landscaping to conserve water and create a habitat that fosters the pollinators needed to support our ecosystem. Not only would permeable hardscape and indigenous plants be naturally drought tolerant but in that they will not require fertilizers they protect our watershed as well. Such landscaping will serve to promote environmental awareness and responsible landscaping choices by others in a highly visible setting and will ultimately save the city money in both water usage and maintenance.

Hope you all had a RESTFUL New Year!
Just want to update you on the City Hall Lawn. This article in the LA Times is not reassuring. I plan on attending the DLANC meeting on 1/10. It sounds like this may be the ONLY public presentation. They meet on the 10th, 6:30 PM, at the Los Angeles Theatre on Broadway near 6th.

No one responded to my petition. Jan Perry finally responded after numerous emails. The prevailing message has been ‘trust us’ and ‘we don’t need help’.

We have been assured by a major environmental group and by civic leaders that the city will pursue the most positive course of action possible. The Department of Recs and Parks will be presenting three proposed plans to the Downtown Los Angeles NC (DLANC) at their regular meeting on January 10th and several of us plan on attending. We'll report back with what we learn and hope to report where the plans will be available for public viewing. Thank you everyone for your help and let's continue to send the message that this is important! We look forward to a City Hall that sets a standard for sustainability and public use.

    5. Sharing feedback from Councilwoman Jan Perry

We just received this response from Councilwoman Jan Perry on facebook.
"Sheri, plans for zero-scaping of the North lawn were well underway before the park was closed for repairs. That is moving forward, but has been slowed down by the need to address clean-up after the protest. My office has also been working with Recreation and Parks to create plans for the South Lawn. Currently, they have created three different proposals and I have asked them to present the proposals to the neighborhood council for feedback before coming to council for feedback. All of the plans include some kind of drought-tolerant landscaping. Any new landscaping on the lawn needs to wait until the water system has been looked at and the clean-up is complete. We also need to ensure that all of the trees are maintained that are currently on the lawn. For more information and updates, please contact my office at 213.473-7009 and ask for Jeff or Stephanie. There will probably be more updates after the new year."

      Organisator der Petition

"Jon Kirk Mukri, general manager for the Department of Recreation and Parks, said the city may spend more than two months and up to $400,000 to re-sod the lawn, repair the irrigation system and plant new drought-tolerant landscaping. At least one tree will have to be removed."
Please help us encourage them to replace the lawn with sustainable landscaping that is appropriate to the use of this space for public assemblies!

    9. Clarification

      Sherri Akers
      Organisator der Petition

This petition in no way reflects disrespect for the efforts of Occupy LA - quite the contrary! Nor are we suggesting that they should be urged to leave. We have seen from experience that the city might move quicky to replace this lawn with new grass (as they did with the LAPD headquarters) and want to urge them to reconsider their options before moving forward. And new lanscaping should certainly take into consideration the need to use this space for peaceful assembly.

I can imagine a combination of California Natives with a smaller area of lawn for the public to enjoy while having lunch or other social activities. The fragrance and educational experience would be terrific. There are also the additional benefits such as drought tolerance and habitat. I can also envision adding trees for shade and habitat. This is an excellent opportunity. Please solicit bids from experienced landscape designers, and crews that know how to install and maintain the garden. It is just as simple as any other type of garden. The garden will require proper maintenance as well as installation. All we have to do is connect the dots and follow-thru.

This new garden would be a great entrance to the Los Angeles City Hall, one brimming with birds and wildlife as well as a true garden representing California. Let's go for it.

I work in LA and what happens in this city resonates throughout this state. The example that we can set here can stand as a precedent to cities across the state to take action in their own backyards.
