A nonprofit that truly cares
-
World Neighbors is a powerful and unique nonprofit organization because, unlike many nonprofits, it does not give away material aid. WN goes into remote villages and works with the people there to brainstorm solutions to the villagers' most pressing problems. World Neighbors helps along the way, focusing on education rather than material aid, helping the villagers to be able to sustain themselves long after the organization leaves. I personally know some people at the organization, and they're truly caring people who want to invest and make a valuable difference in the lives of others. The orgaization just received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the highest rating possible. Charity Navigator specifically applauded WN's fiscal responsibility.

I really like the idea of teaching infrastructure as opposed to granting sollutions through material aid. In particular, thier program on sustainable agriculture is an impressive one, which is addressed impressively on their website:
"Increasingly, rural people do not depend on agriculture alone to survive, but have diversified livelihood strategies. Recognizing this, World Neighbors supports communities in carrying out holistic analysis of their forms of production, sources of income and expenses, and how they can mobilize their assets, natural resource base, individual knowledge and organizational capacity to improve their wellbeing."
I find this approach an admirable one.

This is an approach that i totally support, recently I've been with a project that has been working in 8 urban communities of Delhi for the past 13 years and is now at a stage of phasing out. Because the initial approach was through material aids the communities have been made very dependent on the organization and the question of sustainability without the help of the existing NGO was raised, however with the shift in responsibility and sense of ownership shifting to the community based organizations and leaders, there is a change in the way the women leaders are rising.
This approach should be adopted everywhere possible.

I like the education portion of World Neighbors. Education is something no one can take away from you. Education will teach them the most valuable tools of life. One of them is that life is fragile; we co-exist within a community; we must have cooperation among our neighbors, towns, cities, and the same earth that we live in. I like the sustainable agriculture as well because when you grow your own food and take care of the land, it gives you a better understanding of how inter-connected we all are to the land, people and the environment.

World Neighbors has a great new way to educate family, friends and colleagues about this approach and inspire them to make a real difference in the world.
