Mission
West End's service-enriched environment for homeless, parenting young mothers, formerly homeless senior citizens, and at-risk or homeless LGBT youth provide each individual the opportunity to acquire the skills and support they need to live independently, provide for their family, and avoid recurrent homelessness. Recognizing the social, physical, educational and emotional development needs of youth who have also undergone the trauma of homelessness, the West End community provides individualized opportunities to ensure housing readiness and permanency.
Programs
West End Intergenerational Residence is a unique mixed-age housing facility catering to three generations. At West End, homeless adolescent and young adult women (18-24) with children reside in a secure environment while programming geared toward the specific service needs of this particularly vulnerable population provides them the skills, experiences and confidence necessary to obtain and maintain stable, permanent employment and housing. West End's transitional housing program is the only program serving solely parenting young mothers and their families funded through New York City's Department of Homeless Services.
West End's permanent housing opportunities provide formerly homeless and low-income senior residents the ability to remain comfortably, permanently housed and engaged in the West Side community that many have called home for the past 19 years.
In fall 2010, West End will open the True Colors Residence, the first permanent housing program with supportive services for LGBT youth in New York state, located in Central Harlem.
History
Founded in 1989, West End has provided over 2,000 families and older adults with the assistance necessary to restructure their lives and helped over 1,300 families obtain permanent housing.
In 1992, West End received the Generations United Pioneer Award for its intergenerational approach to housing, and remains the only program of its kind in New York state.
