Darfur: Urgent Appeal
Published October 16, 2007 @ 09:44AM PT
Dear Refugee Supporter,
The UN Refugee Agency has issued an urgent funding appeal for its operation in Darfur, Sudan, saying that unless funding is received soon, it will be forced to scale back its life-saving humanitarian relief effort in the region.
This year alone, UNHCR’s budget for the Darfur region totals more than $19 million. To date, the agency has received merely one third of the funds necessary for its work with those fleeing the crisis in Darfur.
The need for life-saving aid is immense. But, with your help, UNHCR can provide women and children with protection, and basic relief such as blankets, tents, clean water, schools, and health centers. To help UNHCR respond to this urgent appeal, we are setting a campaign goal to raise $20,000 by October 25.
$80 provides an all-season tent to shelter a family of five.
$100 puts a survival kit including blankets, and a cooking and heating stove, into the hands of a refugee family.
$500 sinks two wells to provide safe water to refugees.
Violence and insecurity continues to force Darfurians to flee their villages; UNHCR reports an additional 250,000 have fled their homes in the past number of months.
There are challenges, but the UN Refugee Agency remains committed to its mission in Darfur - to save lives.“Despite security constraints, our teams have continuously assisted the displaced and local population over the past three years,” said UNHCR spokesperson Jennifer Pagonis.
Your support for the UN Refugee Agency’s relief operation in Darfur could not come at a more important time. Please stand with us to ensure that those who have been forced to flee their homes receive protection and humanitarian aid.
Sincerely, J. Michael Coburn
Acting Executive Director
USA for UNHCR
