Mission
More than 130,000 Chicago youth attend poorly performing schools and would benefit from participating in comprehensive, long-term, volunteer-rich, tutor/mentor programs which serve as a meeting place where workplace volunteers become tutors, mentors, leaders and change-agents in the lives of these kids. We offer a comprehensive mix of services intended to help such programs be available to more kids in more neighborhoods of Chicago.
Programs
We operate two programs, one at a neighborhood level and the other at a city and national level.
Our Cabrini Connections Tutor/Mentor Program (http://www.cabriniconnections.net), serves 7th to 12th grade teens living in the Cabrini Green area of Chicago. Since 1993, more than 525 teens have participated in one to seven consecutive years of one-on-one mentoring/tutoring. More than 650 adult volunteers have given one or more years of service. 10% of our volunteers have stayed with the program for 3 or more years. In addition to the one-on-one mentoring, youth participate in arts, technology, video, writing, travel and college bridge programs.
Our second program is the Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC).
Nearly 130,000 children in Chicago attend poorly performing schools and could benefit from comprehensive tutor/mentor programs if they were available. While we continue to operate our own program, Cabrini Connections created the T/MC in 1993 to provide leadership intended to increase the overall availability, distribution and quality of after-school tutor/mentor programs throughout the entire Chicago region. Our actions have lead to more than 150 programs working as a network at strategic times of the year, such as the August/September start of school, when programs join in a Chicagoland Volunteer Recruitment Campaign. Following recruitment we organize activities and share information intended to help programs keep volunteers and convert them into effective tutors, mentors and leaders who will help a program grow.
