Happy Fair Trade Month, October 2007!

Published October 01, 2007 @ 02:15PM PT

October is Fair Trade Month in the U.S., a month-long celebration bringing together the growing network of producers, retailers, and consumers of Fair Trade Certified™ products to promote Fair Trade nationwide. Thousands of retailers across the country are conducting in-store promotions to help educate their patrons about Fair Trade.

Activist groups in 20 cities are holding Fair Trade coffee giveaways today, October 1st, to inform commuters and students about their choices of morning brew.  Dozens more committed individuals and organizations are arranging local Fair Trade Month awareness-building events.  And, in a number of cities Fair Trade farmers will share stories of how Fair Trade has benefited their families and communities.

TransFair USA is offering a Fair Trade video contest with the theme of “Connect with Fair Trade.”  The winner and a guest will travel to Peru to visit Fair Trade farms!  Visit www.connectwithfairtrade.org, for details, plus information on how you can win fun Fair Trade prizes in our Fair Trade Month sweepstakes , special recipes, find local ways to get involved, and learn more about the impact of Fair Trade.

October 1st marks the launch of Fair Trade Towns in the U.S. as well!  For more information, including guidelines and a “how-to” toolkit for becoming a Fair Trade Town, visit www.fairtradetownsusa.org.

Finally, you can support Fair Trade by eating delicious pastries!  On October 6th in San Francisco Fair Trade activist and celebrated pastry chef, Treasa Ewing, will sponsor her second “Bake Sale for Hope” in honor of Fair Trade Month and to support the work of TransFair USA.  Don’t live in the Bay Area?  Take part in a virtual bake sale!  We are hosting a Fair Trade Month Virtual Bake Sale for Hope for those that can’t make to it to San Francisco.  Support Treasa’s leadership and Fair Trade, and buy Treasa’s treats virtually to support farming communities around the globe.

All that should more than keep you busy this October.  Have fun!

In solidarity,
The TransFair USA Family
