Stop the Silence: Stop Child Sexual Abuse

Join the 2009 Run and Rally to Stop the Silence!

Join us in Washington, DC on April 19, 2009 for the Sixth Annual Race to Stop the Silence, and help stop child sexual abuse (CSA). CSA is a silent epidemic that critically affects children, adult survivors, and society. There is hardly a greater crime against children. CSA takes away their innocence and trust, and puts them in constant danger, often in places where they should feel most secure. It can be prevented and treated, with your help. Thank you for helping to Stop the Silence!

I was a victim but I am now a survivor.  It's hard but life will get easier with every one's support.  You have to speak out for yourself  & others.  I will be with you in spirit.  Keep up the good work.

Abuse of any kind is wrong!  Sexual abuse among young children is heinous and we can do something to stop it. Sex Abuse Awareness must be taught at the youngest levels.  It is wrong to sexually abuse any child!  Increased awareness must be taught to the parents as well as the children.

I know what CSA is all about. As a child I have faced this myself. The humilitation was too much and as I was only 7ys when it first happened, I did not know how to even react and who to tell etc. I never want another kid to go through this. Let stop this.

Sexual Abuse can warp a child's mind, body and soul.... for years after the act. Adults who tease with sexual intent and then take advantage of a child are well portrayed in the film 'Monsoon wedding' by Mira Nair. The child's feeling of guilt lingers on and on.

We have to refine and purify and make sensitive every aspect of the entire range of cultures, worldwide, before society becomes safe for all children everywhere. Every step in that direction is a victory for goodness and sensitivity.

I was unable to attend this important event, but am 100% committed to ending the silence that surrounds the Sexual Assualt of Children. I've been an activist on this issue for many years, speaking and writing on my own history of assault, and while I have needed to take time away from this important work to allow myself to heal my own trauma, I feel compelled to again say so much more about this issue. When I began talking and writing about this issue in the 1970's, I felt that we were gradually making a difference in the lives of children who have been assaulted. Lately, I feel as though there is still so much work to be done, including changing the language that we use to speak about these horrific crimes. We will never succeed in ending sexual violence against children unless we stop softening the language that we use to describe it. We need to call on the media to stop using phrases such as "had sex with" or "had an affair" with a child when they report on it. People need to hear the truth when we speak on this topic and we need to stop using clinical terms to describe horrible crimes against children. We need to stop referring to adults who rape or assault children as "sick" or as pedophiles. They are criminals and should be described as such. Maybe then the courts will begin to listen.
