Start a Petition

Want to make a difference, right now? Change.org offers the most powerful online petition tool on the web.

For each user who signs your petition, an email is sent to your specified target (and routed to the signatory's elected representatives if selected) to maximize the petition’s impact. You can also update all participants of the progress of your petition and empower people to share it on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to gain further reach.

To create a petition, follow the four simple steps below and you'll be off running.

Step 1: Describe Your Petition

Provide a title and description of your petition below. Your description should provide background information about the issue and why it is important for others to join. This is only meant as an introduction, and you will write the actual language of your petition in Step 3.

Step 2: Select a Target

Select the elected representative you want to target below. To target someone who is not an elected representative in the United States, skip to Option III below.

Option I: Target Federal Elected Officials

If you select the U.S. House or Senate, users who sign your petition will have their letters routed to their own representatives. If you select the President or type of name of a specific representative, letters will be routed to the specified target(s).

Option II: Target State Elected Officials

If you wish to target a specific state legislature, governor, or elected representative, people who sign your petition and live in the state selected will have their letters routed to their own representatives. Out-of-state petition signers will have their name added to the petition but will not have an email sent on their behalf.

Option III: Target a Local Official, Business Leader, or Other Decision Maker

Use this field if you are not targeting a federal or state elected official.

Step 3: Write Your Letter

Write the form letter you want sent to your target. People signing your petition will add their name to this letter. They will also be able to add a personal message, or edit the letter content if you select that option.

Personalized letters can be more effective than form letters in getting legislators' attention, but some users may be less likely to sign the petition if they feel they need to edit it.

Step 4: Address Information

Fill in your information to send the first email to your selected targets. Note: You must enter your address in order for your letter to successfully be delivered to the appropriate target(s). This information will not appear on Change.org.

Change.org will create an account for you so that you can come back and check on the progress of your petition. Enter the password you would like to use to log in to your account. If you already have a Change.org account enter the password for your existing account.

Don't worry - people will be able to sign your petition even if your goal is achieved. If you do not select a goal, the default will be set to 100 and will automatically increase to a new goal each time a goal is reached.

Your EIN, also known as a Tax Identification Number, is a nine-digit number assigned by the Internal Revenue Service. Every IRS-designated tax-exempt nonprofit organization has its own EIN.

This field is not required for posting your petition, but entering the correct EIN for your organization will ensure that we are able to import all of your information from our partners at Guidestar and enable donation processing for your organization.

Is this a child organization associated with a larger NPO that has the EIN entered above, or an internationally based organization with a U.S. fiscal sponsor?
