Mission
The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence. More about SRLP's mission and goals.
Programs
SRLP works on issues that disproportionately affect low income transgender people: discrimination and harassment in foster care, juvenile justice and criminal justice settings and lack of access to identity documents, Medicaid and public assistance, housing, employment and education. We address these issues by providing direct services and removing legal and policy barriers that damage quality of life and hinder the ability of transgender people to participate safely in education, employment, social services, criminal justice, and healthcare. We also use public education and training, and community organizing support strategies to achieve our mission.

History
SRLP began as a one-person fellowship in 2002. As community support of the project ballooned, we transitioned into a collective structure with a growing staff and increased volunteer collective members. Our transition into a collective governance structure was a deliberate move to maximize community involvement and accountability, increase sustainability, and redistribute decision-making power away from traditional hierarchies of educational, race, age and gender privilege. Our unique membership structure has expanded the capacity of the organization and is being used as a model for many other groups around North America. Our move toward a volunteer-heavy structure was also motivated by the exceptional need for our services. From the day we opened our doors in September 2002, we have been flooded with calls from people across the country who have been turned away or discriminated against by other legal service providers, and who have nowhere to go for help.
