Seeds of Hope Initiative
Last year, the price of beans in El Salvador jumped from 45 cents per pound to $1.25. According to the UN World Food Programme the average Salvadoran family living in the countryside is consuming just 60% of the calories that it did in May 2006. A combination of unjust trade policies, natural disasters, competition for food grains with bio-fuels, and the dismantling of the agricultural sector have resulted in a food crisis.
SHARE's Seeds of Hope Initiative promotes food security and food sovereignty. This will help provide a package to farmers which includes native seeds and fertilizers. In addition, you will be supporting a process of education about the benefits of saving native seeds and using organic fertilizers as a way to become more independent from high priced hybrid seeds and chemical inputs. One seed kit costs USD $350.00 and will be given as a loan to be repaid at a 6% interest, which will be used as a revolving fund for planting in the future.
