Field Update: Ending Hunger in Africa
Published September 10, 2009 @ 07:24AM PT
The Kalale District of Benin is a poor, dry region with around 100,000 people with no access to electricity. About 95% of that population is involved in agriculture, but is hindered during the six month dry season.
In 2007, SELF partnered with ADESCA to provide solar-powered drip irrigation to three women's farming collectives to empower women so they could feed their children and to end hunger and poverty.
In 2009, the results have been remarkable: women and children are better fed, women have garnered more income by selling crops in the marketplace, and that money has sent more children to school. Moreover, the women are already beginning to brainstorm other ways to increase income through plans that can be used in the villages!
