History
Save The Orcas, Inc is a non-profit organization dedicated towards the conservation and preservation of orcas and other marine mammals, along with their threatened habitats. Our organization was founded in July of 2005 in an effort to educate the public about the threatened status of the Southern Resident orca populations of the Pacific Northwest. At the time, the Southern Residents were listed as a threatened species under the Marine Mammal Protection act, which was enacted on October 21, 1972. While the orcas were granted some protection under this listing, many felt it was inadequate and wanted to see the orcas listed as an endangered species, rather than a threatened one.
In November of 2005, the Southern Residents were finally listed as an endangered species, and have been granted significant protection under the legislation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. At present, many experts, organizations and governmental agencies are working towards enacting a recovery plan that would help to ensure the stability and future for the endangered orca pods. Save The Orcas, Inc was initially founded for this purpose, and has since grown into an international organization fighting for the protection of all the world's marine mammals and their environments.
Save The Orcas is located in Washington state, with supporters from around the globe. The organization is staffed by volunteers, with members of the board directing most of the organization's efforts. Save The Orcas works closely with other like-minded organizations, and is pursuing it's goals of educating the public and advocating for the rights and protection of marine mammals.
