We've made tremendous progress!
That's what a new report from Safe Kids USA is concluding that looks back over the past 20 years. As a nation, we have reduced the unintentional injury death rate for children 14 and under by 45 percent since 1987.
But there is some bad news as well: accidental injuries remain the number one cause of death for children ages one to 14, even though many of these deaths can be prevented. So to bring the children's accidental injury death rate down even further, Safe Kids USA has developed a 10-step checklist of safety habits that can have a major impact on keeping kids safe.
CALL TO ACTION
In addition, Safe Kids USA has issued a Call to Action for national and state governmental leaders to recognize that accidental injury is the 1 threat to the nation's children, and in response, to marshal a multi-faceted effort -- similar to what the nation has done to address drunk driving and smoking cessation-- to eliminate this serious public health threat.
