Mission
Mission: Rosie's Broadway Kids is an arts education organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children through the arts. Using professional teaching artists, Rosie's Broadway Kids offers classes in dance and music and a professional theater experience for children who might otherwise not have the opportunity. Its goal is to inspire excellence, motivate learning, uplift the human spirit, and to instill a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
Rosie O'Donnell, Board President, founded Rosie's Broadway Kids in 2003 to give New York City public-school students exposure to the richness of the Broadway Theater. Because New York City public schools rely largely on private funding for arts education, they continue to struggle due to a constant shortage of public funding and are in need of quality, affordable arts education providers. Rosie's Broadway Kids serves the schools with the highest need: eighty-five percent of students who participate in Rosie's Broadway Kids are from low-income families. It is the only organization in New York City dedicated to offering intensive study of musical theater at no cost, enabling schools with budget constraints and students from low income families to receive high quality arts education.
Programs
PS Broadway is a fifteen-week musical theater program for fifth graders attending New York City public schools. Every fifth grade class at each participating school takes part in the program, which includes:
-One hour weekly instruction conducted by three teaching artists with live music accompaniment
-A field trip to attend a Broadway show and a post-show talkback with actors and crew
-A private concert and question/answer session at their school with a guest Broadway performer
-Final student performance of selected songs and dances from the Broadway repertoire for parents, peers, and the community ACTE II is RBKids scholarship program.
Outstanding students are selected from the PS Broadway program for ACTE II, which offers an extensive curriculum for the study of musical theater after school and in the summer. Students in good standing may stay in ACTE II through high school.
