Unselfish Acts

Published June 02, 2007 @ 10:05AM PT

Last night was our monthly "movie night" with our girls who have been trafficked at the youth detention center.  As we waited for the girls to finish up with the group before us, we sat in the pod watching a re-run of "Friends".  In this episode, Pheobe was in pursuit of finding an unselfish deed as her conclusion was that all deeds are done for the benefit of the giver. When the girls came in we were greated by several new faces.  Well, they really weren't new as they were repeaters, some we have seen multiple times since we started our program last Aug.  However, this time there was no ice to be broken.  One of the girls started weeping as soon as she saw us and one of the volunteers lovingly embraced her the entire evening.Another girl was celebrating her 15th birthday.  We all sang happy birthday to her, gave her a small token of our love and a card with hand written notes of our and her heavenly Father's affection towards her.  After reading the card, she turned to me and said, "You know, that was really nice, thank you."  I could tell she was sincere but most of all she knows that we really do care about her wellbeing. Our purpose for movie night is to develop our bond with the girls by introducing them to uplifting Christian films and good fellowship.  We muched on popcorn and cookies and talked about their court cases and issues they are having at home, in school and in the community.  It usually takes two or three visits to the detention center before they really start to open up and trust us.  This is starting to happen and it is so exciting. On the way home the Spirit of the Lord filled the car.  It was so dense and thick that I could touch Him.  His message to me was that He is so very pleased with us.  His Spirit continued to be on me throughout the night I woke the next morning singing praises to Him.On the way home, I kept thinking of Pheobe's desire to find an unselfish act. We know that kindness done in the name of the Lord is done only to offer a sweet fragrance unto Him. To spend lavishly on our girls is to do the same to the Lord Himself.  What a joy it is to give.
