The Center for Public Integrity

Mission

The Center's books and reports combine political science and investigative reporting, unfettered by the usual time and space constraints. By providing thorough, thoughtful and objective analyses, the Center hopes to serve as an honest broker of information -- and to inspire a better-informed citizenry to demand a higher level of accountability from its government and elected leaders.

Programs

Since its inception, the Center has released more than 230 investigative reports, including 12 books, and has been honored 21 times by Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), the Society of Professional Journalists and other respected organizations. Two Center books have won IRE's prestigious national book award: Capitol Offenders: How Private Interests Govern Our States (2003) and Animal Underworld: Inside America's Black Market for Rare and Exotic Species (1999). The Center also extends globally its style of watchdog journalism in the public interest. Created in 1997, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) network includes 92 leading investigative reporters and editors in 48 countries. The group has collaborated on numerous online and printed reports on corporate crime, arms trafficking, terrorism, U.S. military policy and human rights issues. Global Access, another international project, was launched in 2001 to systematically track and report on openness, accountability and the rule of law in various countries.
