As a child in a racially segregated society, my family converted to Catholicism. With other churches clearly divided along racial lines, there was one parish and it welcomed all.

Years later, I entered graduate school in a different region. During this period, my home was a diverse dormitory. In fact, 60 percent of the residents were from other countries. Initially, many were perplexed that I did not validate my country's exported images of Black women from Alabama.

Through these experiences, I became aware that most societies are structured to divide and polarize. The gift of reason is truncated as we are programmed to think in exclusive terms. Regardless of the “local” labels, we are trained to choose "this" over "that.”

From my experiences, I have learned that more often than not the gifts of reason, empathy, and listening lead to the discovery of a third way – a way to wisdom.
