About Philip

I am a former teacher now teaching teachers.

I believe in the ideal of participatory democracy, but if we want to follow that path, we have to help children develop the skills and capacities to become adults who are democratic caretakers, and our schools do not.

My research focuses on what a democratic education might look like and do, and I spend a good deal of time debunking the "political science abuse" perpetrated by neoliberal school reformers on both the "right" (i.e. Jay P. Greene) and on the left (i.e. Arnie Duncan).

We are expecting our first child in June, and while I have been a strong supporter of public schools for years, if they do not change we will pursue other options.

BUT, at the end of the day, some 89% of Americans will attend "public" schools, and if we want a more perfect union, the conditions of and in those schools must change.

If that change can be organized here, then I am willing to give 110% to making it happen.
