NARAL Pro-Choice America

Things we're still fighting for

Published August 26, 2009 @ 11:54AM PT

Although Roe v. Wade ensures that abortion is legal in all 50 states, access to abortion services remains a big problem for women across the country. After an Oklahoma judge "tossed out a controversial ultrasound requirement" last week, a great article in Tulsa World reminds us "that's a minor setback when compared to the many access-curtailing victories [anti-choice opponents]'ve scored in recent years." Read the article for some of the disturbing results of these measures at http://www.tulsaworld.com/opinion/article.aspx?subjectid=61&articleid=20090823_211_G6_Aborti987263&allcom=1.  Also, Tapped, the blog at The American Prospect, explains why RU-486, the abortion pill, hasn't improved access to abortion care: http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/tapped_archive?month=08&year=2009&base_name=ru486_hasnt_improved_abortion. Protecting women's access to abortion care is just as important as keeping the right to choose legal, and it's a battle we've got to keep fighting.

Of course, health care is the fight that's on everyone's minds today, and we've got news there too. Lisa Subeck, the executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, wrote a great letter explaining the abortion compromise in the health-care reform bill at http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/opinion/readersviews/463169. Still, a post at LiveScience (http://www.livescience.com/environment/090824-healthcare-myths.html) tells us that most people believe in health care myths, including that "roughly six out of 10 Americans believe taxpayers will be required to pay for abortions." You can help debunk this myth by getting this message out to your friends and family: http://www.blogforchoice.com/archives/2009/08/the-truth-about.html

Finally, an article in the Associated Press says that many young people, including young supporters of President Obama, just don't seem to care about health-care reform (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hEl6XNNanFnCo4oXWo0T-0YaelrAD9A9GRT81). We want to know what you think. Do you agree with the article that young people are just not interested? What ideas do you have to engage young Americans in health-care reform?

There's a lot happening in choice-related news this week at all levels, from state laws to health-care reform to elections! In Washington, D.C., anti-choice Democrats, such as Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan, are threatening to block health-care reform unless it bans abortion, which would result in women losing coverage they already have. If you haven't tak... Read More

There's a lot of choice-related news coming from all parts of the country this week.   On the Virginia election front, we were glad to hear that when young women find out about candidate Bob McDonnell's anti-choice thesis, they are "much less likely to back" him for governor. But we have a lot of work to do, because only half the young women in Vir... Read More

We're very excited to hear President Obama's speech on health-care reform tonight, and will watch to see if he'll mention how health-reform opponents are using abortion to derail health-care reform. In the meantime, we'll keep doing our part to get out the truth about abortion and health-care reform. Over the weekend, the LA Times did a good job explaini... Read More

Happy September! As we step into fall, we're looking to the political battles that are heating up. First, though, we want to take a moment to remember Senator Kennedy. Former NARAL Pro-Choice America President Kate Michelman reminisced about the late senator's work for women. We must also continue to remember Dr. George Tiller, who was murdered a... Read More
