Health-Care and more!

So much of the the news lately has been on health-care reform. Since the right-wing is spreading so many misconceptions, distortions, and outright lies about abortion, here are some articles to clear things up:
NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota's executive director corrects one mistake: there's no abortion mandate in the health-care bills.

Although debunking the anti-choice myths surrounding health-care reform is taking up most of our time our top priority right now, there are still a lot of other issues to keep an eye on.
Newsweek recently profiled Dr. Leroy Carhart (http://www.newsweek.com/id/212017/page/1), an abortion provider who is trying to ensure that the work of the late Dr. George Tiller continues goes on. He too has faced threats of violence and intimidation his entire career, and next week, police in Omaha, where Dr. Carhart's clinic is located, are preparing for the anti-choice protesters that are expected to swarm his reproductive-health center (http://www.omaha.com/article/20090817/NEWS01/708179958/-1/FRONTPAGE). Kansas and Nebraska NOW are organizing a counter-protest; you can go to http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=140223851130&ref=mf for details.
Great news in Oklahoma, as judges strike down an anti-choice ultrasound law: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/18/AR2009081803323.html
But a similar law in South Dakota leads to worries that the only clinic in the state - a Planned Parenthood - might be forced to close: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/19/AR2009081902263.html

There's a lot happening in choice-related news this week at all levels, from state laws to health-care reform to elections! In Washington, D.C., anti-choice Democrats, such as Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan, are threatening to block health-care reform unless it bans abortion, which would result in women losing coverage they already have. If you haven't tak... Read More

There's a lot of choice-related news coming from all parts of the country this week. On the Virginia election front, we were glad to hear that when young women find out about candidate Bob McDonnell's anti-choice thesis, they are "much less likely to back" him for governor. But we have a lot of work to do, because only half the young women in Vir... Read More

We're very excited to hear President Obama's speech on health-care reform tonight, and will watch to see if he'll mention how health-reform opponents are using abortion to derail health-care reform. In the meantime, we'll keep doing our part to get out the truth about abortion and health-care reform. Over the weekend, the LA Times did a good job explaini... Read More

Happy September! As we step into fall, we're looking to the political battles that are heating up. First, though, we want to take a moment to remember Senator Kennedy. Former NARAL Pro-Choice America President Kate Michelman reminisced about the late senator's work for women. We must also continue to remember Dr. George Tiller, who was murdered a...
