  1. News from Ohio, Arizona, Virginia… and more!

    Published October 02, 2009 @ 07:26AM PT

There's a lot happening in choice-related news this week at all levels, from state laws to health-care reform to elections! In Washington, D.C., anti-choice Democrats, such as Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan, are threatening to block health-care reform unless it bans abortion, which would result in women losing coverage they already have. If you haven't taken action yet, please contact your members of Congress today. Shout out to Ohio state Sen. Teresa Fedor and state Rep. Tyrone Yates, who worked with NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio to introduce the Ohio Prevention First Act to help prevent unintended pregnancy. NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio also reminds us why prevention is so important. They report that the Buckeye State "is one of the worst states when it comes to funding, accessibility to information... 2. Three states, two anti-choice laws, one election...and more!

    Published September 25, 2009 @ 10:15AM PT

There's a lot of choice-related news coming from all parts of the country this week.   On the Virginia election front, we were glad to hear that when young women find out about candidate Bob McDonnell's anti-choice thesis, they are "much less likely to back" him for governor. But we have a lot of work to do, because only half the young women in Virginia know about the thesis! Help us spread the word to key voters in Virginia: make a donation today. Attempts to fight anti-choice laws in court are going strong, too. In Arizona, courts only have until next week to rule on a suit challenging parts of a new anti-choice law. NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona did all it could to block the law, but that state's anti-choice legislature and governor refused to listen. Meanwhile, anti-choicers in ... Read More

  3. More on abortion and health-care reform

    Published September 09, 2009 @ 02:25PM PT

We're very excited to hear President Obama's speech on health-care reform tonight, and will watch to see if he'll mention how health-reform opponents are using abortion to derail health-care reform. In the meantime, we'll keep doing our part to get out the truth about abortion and health-care reform. Over the weekend, the LA Times did a good job explaining how a compromise that was passed in the House " isn't a nefarious plan to promote abortions." If you want to learn more about the Capps amendment, read the whole story. Then in today's Washington Post, columnist Ruth Marcus gives examples of anti-choice fear-mongering, and tells her readers, "Don't believe it." She also points out that it "would be perfectly fine with some of the critics" if the new health-care system would tell "wo... Read More

  4. Virginia Could Elect Governor Who Opposed Birth Control?!

    Published September 02, 2009 @ 07:53AM PT

Happy September! As we step into fall, we're looking to the political battles that are heating up. First, though, we want to take a moment to remember Senator Kennedy. Former NARAL Pro-Choice America President Kate Michelman reminisced about the late senator's work for women. We must also continue to remember Dr. George Tiller, who was murdered at the end of May, and the chilling effect his death has had on abortion providers. The Washington Post explains the effect that his death has had on medical students, and the shortage of medical students who are learning to provide abortion care. Dr. Leroy Carhart is not giving up, though, and continues his vital work in Nebraska even though opponents like Operation Rescue are targeting his practice. NARAL Pro-Choice America hosted a vi... Published August 27, 2009 @ 12:14PM PT

(Cross-posted from Blog for Choice) I really hope that you, the readers of Blog for Choice, got a chance to see Dr. Leory Carhart's profile in Newsweek last week. His clinic - one of a handful left in a post-Dr.-Tiller world - is under attack by the groups that attacked Dr. Tiller's Wichita clinic: Carhart knows there are people who want him dead, too. A few days after Tiller's murder, Carhart's daughter received a late-night phone call saying her parents too had been killed. His clinic got suspicious letters, one with white powder. It's been like this since Carhart started performing abortions in the late 1980s. On the same day Nebraska passed a parental-notification law in 1991, his farm burned down, killing 17 horses, a cat, and a dog (the local fire department was unable to determ... Read More

  6. Things we're still fighting for

    Published August 26, 2009 @ 11:54AM PT

Although Roe v. Wade ensures that abortion is legal in all 50 states, access to abortion services remains a big problem for women across the country. After an Oklahoma judge "tossed out a controversial ultrasound requirement" last week, a great article in Tulsa World reminds us "that's a minor setback when compared to the many access-curtailing victories [anti-choice opponents]'ve scored in recent years." Read the article for some of the disturbing results of these measures at http://www.tulsaworld.com/opinion/article.aspx?subjectid=61&articleid=20090823_211_G6_Aborti987263&allcom=1.  Also, Tapped, the blog at The American Prospect, explains why RU-486, the abortion pill, hasn't improved access to abortion care: http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/tapped_archive?month=08&...
