"Slavery Still Exists"

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page!

Please help me support Polaris Project by making a donation. It's fast, easy, and secure.

I am working as an intern this fall for Polaris Project, a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC, with a local office in New Jersey.  Founded in 2002 by two graduates from Brown University, Polaris Project has become one of the largest organization combating human trafficking in the United States and Japan.

What is human trafficking?  Human trafficking is the practice of modern-day slavery in which victims are forced or coerced into labor or commercial sexual exploitation.  Labor trafficking encompasses a variety of situations including domestic servitude, sweatshops, peddling rings and local farm operations.  Sex trafficking involves any form of sexual exploitation through prostitution, pornography, bride trafficking and the commercial abuse of children.  Vulnerable populations are targeted by domestic sex traffickers, more commonly referred to as “pimps” through a variety of recruitment and control methods.

Many falsely believe that human trafficking is not a relevant issue in the United States.  Human trafficking is now the second largest and one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has calculated that at least 100,000 minors are sex trafficking victims within our national borders. The National Runaway Switchboard assesses that the average age of entry into the sex industry of the United States is between 12 and 14 years old.  As these statistics have begun to emerge and human trafficking increasingly gains media spotlight, legislators and the general public are recognizing the urgency in responding to this critical human rights issue.  Polaris Project seeks to provide a comprehensive approach to combating human trafficking.  These efforts include direct outreach, extensive client services, training, shaping public policy and operating the National hotline.  The New Jersey office is currently the only organization in the state dedicated exclusively to the cause!
