August 4th, 2010 will be President Obama's 49th birthday.  While he will be celebrating his birthday with First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters, Malia & Sasha, many LGBT binational couples are currently unable to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and other special occasions together, simply because of our nation's discriminatory immigration laws!

We are urging President Obama, who supports the passage of Uniting American Families Act and Comprehensive Immigration Reform, to call on congress to support and pass this bill!  Many lives and many families are being torn apart by this discriminatory immigration law!

Both the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA; H.R. 1024/S.424) and the Reuniting Families Act (RFA; H.R. 2709) simply seek to provide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered U.S. citizens and permanent residents the right to sponsor their partner for immigration. Each bill outlines the same process and penalties that are applied in heterosexual partner (i.e., marriage or fiancée) sponsorship applications. By calling on Congress to support and pass these bills, and/or include their language in Comprehensive Immigration Reform, President Obama will be showing his dedication to equality and the belief that no American should be forced to choose between their country and the person they love.

We want to be able to and deserve to celebrate our birthdays, anniversaries and other happy occasion with our families too!

President Obama - please speak out and urge Congress to pass the Uniting American Families Act now!

Happy Birthday, Mr President!

Dear President Obama

Dear President Obama,

I am writing to you today to wish you a very Happy Birthday! Birthdays are a time most Americans spend celebrating with family and friends, filled with joy and laughter, and remembered fondly by many.

As you enjoy your special day, I’d like to ask you to please think of the thousands of families currently unable to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and other special occasions together, simply because of our nation's discriminatory immigration laws. I am specifically referring to LGBT Americans with foreign partners – same-sex binational couples – denied the right to sponsor their permanent partner to live with them in the United States.

As you are aware, these Americans in loving and committed relationships are often forced to make heartbreaking decisions to maintain their relationship.

More often than not, these include having to leave the United States in order to be with the person they love. These American citizens are forced to give up careers, leave behind aging parents and young adult children who rely on them and leave a community which benefits from their ongoing and active participation.

By calling on Congress to support and pass these bills, and/or include their language in Comprehensive Immigration Reform, you are showing your dedication to equality and the belief that no American should be forced to choose between their country and the person they love.

Thank you for your time on this important matter. Best wishes to you and your family on your birthday, Mr. President.

Respectfully,

[Your name]
