Wild Spirit Nature Preserve at Seven Ponds

Wild Spirit Nature Preserve at Seven Ponds

The Issue

Wild Spirit Education of Delevan, NY in Cattaraugus County would like to operate a preserve in Northern Cattaraugus County. We would like the county to lease, sell or donate the parcel of land located at the corner of Gooseneck and Eastland Roads to Wild Spirit in order to create this nature preserve.

After two years of on and off talks with the county we have finally been asked to present our case to the legislative committee for tourism and land use. We would like to go into the meeting with as many signatures as possible supporting our goal of acquiring the County land.

Allowing Wild Spirit to manage this property and create a nature preserve here would be a great asset to the county and its citizens as well as all of WNY. This would be the only nature preserve in the northern part of the county, making it a tourist draw. Having the land managed by Wild Spirit Education would also open it's natural beauty and use to a larger number of community members.

Wild Spirit Education works with local schools and scout groups who would now be able to use the property for nature study and education. Public programs would be ongoing at the preserve year round.

The county forest located at the corner of Gooseneck Rd and Eastland Rd, known as Seven ponds, is currently owned by Cattaraugus County and listed as a county forest. The land is left unmanaged and used by a small number of local citizens for hiking and fishing. The local teens have abused the property by burning trees, littering and engaging in underage parties. Other individuals have cut down saplings and torn up the property with ATVs and snowmobiles which are not allowed on the property.

Help us restore the land to it's beauty and preserve it for future generations.
