Wheelchair Securement During Transport

Wheelchair Securement During Transport
The Issue
Did you know that a wheelchair passenger in a van is not required to be secured with a seat belt? Imagine, just one quick stop, an accident in the blink of an eye, can throw that rider out of the wheelchair with the force of a bullet.
There are over 1.5 million wheelchair users in this country. Over 88,000 are under the age of 18. Current Federal Safety regulations mandate that all motor vehicle passengers use seat belts. Yet, those same regulations fail to include passengers that use a wheelchair as their seat. The number one cause of injury to wheelchair users is improper securement during transport.
We need to assure wheelchair passengers that industry standards of safety will be legal standards. Let's start with New Jersey.
We need our legislators to:
1. Hold Transportation Committee Meetings and post A2036 and S715 to each agenda
2. Vote to move it forward and support its passage in the House.
