There are now nearly 15 million Americans out of work who want and need jobs. Uncertain future of health care reform and inadequate provision for mortgage foreclosure relief are adding grievously to the problems faced by these Americans and their families. Many economists noted in early 2009 that the danger was that the U.S. Government would do too little, not too much. That has proved to be a grimly accurate prediction. A major green jobs program, on the scale of the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps, is clearly needed and practical; otherwise the tragedy will worsen incalculably. Congress must pass a fast and adequate green work program on an emergency basis.
