STRUT is in a league all it's own at VCU. So many people have been positively affected by this organization. STRUT is a quintessential example of that diversity. It would be a travesty to see it go, especially because students have devoted so much to it over the years and are still doing so. It is important to remember that VCU is famous for art, and fashion is one of the best art forms we have. Student organizations are like junior businesses and they run as such. STRUT is like a mini production company that has its own teams. These skills are integral for the working world and there aren't many opportunities for students on (our campus) or anywhere to gain this kind of experience. There are thousands of people fighting for chances to put on shows/model/make up/performance etc and we got the experience of doing them because of STRUT. Why not have a forum to showcase the talent of our student body? Since when are we against that? Its a great opportunity/resource for young designers, future leaders, aspiring models, talented individuals, entrepreneurs and people that simply enjoy good entertainment! No matter what background or major any student can be apart of STRUT in some facet. This organization has brought students to this institution, has helped individuals obtain amazing internships and careers and allowed students to take pride in their school.
STRUT 2012 was shut down by VCU administration without proper procedure, violating constitutions/bylaws, without supported facts or reasoning. The committee was simply sat down and told no the show will not happen without the ability to negotiate half way through planning and preparation after all of the hard work, invested time, invested money and high hopes. This committee toiled tirelessly, even willing to negotiate and make changes to the shows logistics without compensation which was provided in years past in hopes of being able to produce an amazing fashion show, reach out to the community, better the VCU experience and continue the legacy but was denied this opportunity. There was also discussion that there may not be a show until 2013 if at all. Student organizations are funded by the STUDENT activity fee, which is paid for by students. Do not allow VCU administration to ruin one of the best traditions at VCU and run over the students. Do not allow VCU administration to strip future VCU students of this experience while undermining what alumni members left behind. The STUDENTS make this university.
STRUT 2012 to occur & STRUT at VCU to remain a tradition true to its roots.
Greetings,
