The WHO recommends a c-section rate between 5-15%. The U.S. c-section rate is quickly approaching 40% and higher. To lower this rate immediately, Congress should require a "second opinion" on all non-emergency c-sections. In other hospitals that have already instituted a "second opinion" requirement, c-section rates have halved. Lower c-section rates mean lower health costs, and healthier moms and babies both now and in the future. To read more about c-sections, please visit www.ican-online.org.

C-section Rates

Dear Representative,

Please make lowering the United States c-section rate a priority in your term. Our nation's c-section rate is one of the highest in the world, and it is costing our mothers and babies dearly. The percentage of our GDP spent on health care is higher than other developed nations, and one of the reason is the high c-section rate. Here are ways to lower the c-section rate:

1) Require signed consent for all c-sections with notice on the dangers of a c-section including a higher risk of death and hysterectomy.

2) Require a second doctor sign off on all c-sections.

3) Require hospitals to lower the c-section rate to below 30% for funding and insurance approval.
