In the past human rights opponents have urged some members in U.S. Congress to enact a 'Federal Marriage Amendment' to the United States Constitution to ban civil marriage for same-sex couples throughout America once and for all. That is NOT acceptable and it goes AGAINST every State's right to legally recognize and validate same-sex marriages. Remember when the State of California banned same-sex marriage in the State's Constitution? The Supreme Court of California said it was constitutional. It it is time to start persuading U.S. Congress and the President to not accept such a horrible fate for LGBT civil rights.

The State of California has planned a Federal Court legal challenge to 'Proposition 8' of the 2008 Election. Who knows what will be in the minds of some of our fellow U.S. Congress members when the court case titled Perry v. Schwarzenneger becomes a success, as well as the legislative repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act from Federal law. A great backlash where they amend the U.S. Constitution to ban same-sex relationships can happen.

Sign the petition below - I believe it is the correct thing to do to start taking action now, no matter how small it may be in the beginning.

Pass a Federal Respect for Marriage Amendment

Dear Representative,

I strongly urge you to protect human rights by enacting a constitutional amendment that respects marriage for every loving, responsible adult couple throughout the country. I need to remind you that Article 16 of the Universal Human Rights Declaration (United Nations) respects marriage and family, and so could the United States Constitution.

You can start by making the language of the Federal law in this way:
TITLE OF BILL: RESPECT FOR AMERICAN MARRIAGE ACT. Creates a 28th amendment to the United States Constitution.
Section 1. To protect religious freedom, no court shall interpret this measure to require any priest, minister, pastor, rabbi, or other person authorized to perform marriages by any religious denomination, church, or other non-profit religious institution to perform any marriage in violation of his or her religious beliefs. The refusal to perform a marriage under this provision shall not be the basis for lawsuit or liability, and shall not affect the tax-exempt status of any religious denomination, church or other religious institution.

Section 2. To provide for fairness in the government’s issuance of civil marriage licenses, a new section to the United States Constitution is hereby amended to read as follows: Marriage is between only two persons and shall not be restricted on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.

Section 3. Two persons of full age, without any limitation as referenced in Section 2, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.

Section 4. Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.

Section 5. The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.

Thank you very much for understanding,
Signed,
