Cut the 2012 Nuclear Weapons Budget
Dear U.S. Congress,
Dear U.S. Congress,
On behalf of the 40,000 members of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation we urge you to support cutting the FY2012 nuclear weapons budget. This would not only demonstrate sensible fiscal policy, but would also make the world a safer place. We urge you to support a budget that supports the prosperity of our country, not the potential destruction. Congress is cutting spending on vital domestic programs, but there are proposals to increase spending on nuclear weapons by almost 20 percent over the 2010 levels. This is unacceptable. This increased spending will not only further increase the deficit, but will also undermine U.S. credibility on non-nuclear proliferation efforts.
We strongly encourage you to stop funding projects that would increase the U.S.’s capacity to produce new nuclear weapons. The Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement project (Los Alamos, NM) and the Uranium Processing Facility (Oak Ridge, TN) are now projected to cost taxpayers more than $12 billion, and the National Nuclear Security Administration has failed to demonstrate the national security need for increased nuclear weapons production.
By cutting these programs, national security could be strengthened by increasing programs for nonproliferation programs such as the Global Threat Reduction Initiative as well as dismantlement programs. As you consider the FY2012 federal budget please direct funding away from wasteful modernization programs and bomb plants. The U.S. needs to step up and be a leader in nuclear disarmament in order to create a safer, more peaceful world.
