British Columbia's Medical Services Plan currently covers male-to-female gender reassignment surgery, as well as female-to-male top surgery (mastectomy) and chest re-contouring. However, the province does not currently fund bottom-surgery for FTM citizens. Urge the British Columbia Ministry of Health to join the ranks of Ontario and Quebec in performing the surgery, and also to start including this surgery in their MSP guidelines.
Gender Reassignment Surgery in British Columbia
Greetings,
I am writing to you today to urge you to reconsider your position on not including a full range of female-to-male gender reassignment surgeries in the British Columbia Medical Services Plan. While it is fantastic that the province of British Columbia is now offering to cover top-only surgeries for FTM transgender citizens, it is incomparable to the range of surgeries offered by Ontario, one of the other leading provinces.
Furthermore, it is problematic that male-to-female bottom surgeries are covered while female-to-male bottom surgeries are not. Canada is a country that prides itself on its equality of its citizens and British Columbia has always been one of the trendsetting provinces. I hope that you will reevaluate the MSP and begin to lead the way in representing change for transgender FTMs in Vancouver and throughout the province of B.C.
