The University of Windsor currently buys eggs that come from factory farms, where five to seven hens are typically crammed into each battery cage. Where each hen is forced to live in a space smaller than a sheet of notebook paper. Where hens can’t turn around, stretch their wings, dust bathe – or even build a nest to lay their eggs in. The conditions are not just bad for the hens: cage systems carry high environmental costs and eggs from caged hens have an increased risk of Salmonella infection. Fortunately for hens, us and our school – there are cage-free options available.         Why should you support a cage-free school? ·         By encouraging the University of Windsor to serve cage-free eggs, you will be doing the right thing for animals. ·         You will be supporting humane and sustainable agriculture. ·         You will be ensuring that the University of Windsor’s purchasing decisions reflect your own values. ·         The University of Windsor will join the growing list of humane purchasers.

University of Windsor: Go Cage-Free!

Greetings,

As someone who cares about animal welfare, I would like the University of Windsor to join the growing number of schools that are supporting humane and sustainable food production by buying cage-free eggs. More than 350 colleges and universities in North America have reduced or eliminated eggs from caged hens from their campus dining facilities. I strongly urge the University of Windsor to join this expanding number.

In conventional egg production, five to seven hens are typically crammed into each cage, having almost no room to turn around or stretch their wings. Each hen must spend her whole life in a space smaller than a sheet of notebook paper. Hens are unable to nest, perch, or scratch, causing severe stress and frustration. The hens also suffer loss of feathers, bruising and abrasions from constantly rubbing against the cage and each other. In addition, cage systems carry high environmental costs because of the extensive quantities of waste they generate. Finally, recent research indicates that eggs from caged hens have an increased risk of Salmonella infection.

Fortunately, eggs do not have to be produced this way. I am contacting you to request that the University of Windsor serve eggs from cage-free hens.

The University of Windsor's mission statement reads that our very reason for being is to enable people to "make a better world." Let’s live up to our mission. Let’s switch to cage-free eggs for animals, our health, and the environment.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

THANK YOU for changing Vanier and Crocodile Grill to cage-free eggs but let's do this for the rest of campus.
